Kids, Grandparents & Clouds – Our Whole Family Loved the Jakhu Ropeway

Family trips often come with their own set of happiness as well as challenges—finding activities that appeal to all age groups, managing energy levels, and ensuring safety without compromising on fun. During our recent visit to Shimla, we stumbled upon an experience that checked all the right boxes: the Jakhu Ropeway.

From the moment we boarded the cable car to the time we stepped out near the mesmerizing views of majestic Jakhu Temple, it was a ride filled with much excitement, amazement, and heartfelt smiles from every generation of our family.

This wasn’t just a sightseeing adventure. It became a cherished memory of all of us together that we still talk about weeks later.

Planning a Family Day in Shimla

Shimla is known for its colonial charm, pleasant weather, and gorgeous hillscapes. While we had our itinerary packed with Mall Road shopping and ridge-side strolls, we were keen on finding a family-friendly activity in Shimla that didn’t require too much walking but still offered something unique.

A local shopkeeper recommended the Jakhu Ropeway, and it instantly clicked with everyone, from our kids aged 5 and 9, to my parents in their 60s. The idea of flying above the hills and skipping the tiring trek up to Jakhu Temple sounded perfect.

So, after a hearty breakfast at our hotel near the Ridge, we headed towards the base station located just a short walk from Mall Road.

First Impressions: Smooth, Safe & Superbly Managed

As soon as we reached the Jakhu Ropeway station, we were pleasantly surprised. It was clean, well-organized, and the ticketing process was smooth as well. The waiting area had all the instructions clearly mentioned, and the staff was polite, even offering help to us while boarding.

What stood out to us was how comfortable and accessible the entire experience was for all ages. The cabins are enclosed, spacious enough for small families, and offer a clear 360-degree view of Shimla’s beautiful pine-covered hills.

Our youngest was jumping with joy even before the ride started, while my mom, who usually avoids heights, gave us a nervous smile but agreed to try it out. She’s now the biggest fan in the family.

The Ride: Clouds, Laughter & A View Like No Other

As the cable car gently lifted off, Shimla’s rooftops began to shrink beneath us. What followed was a surreal six-minute ride floating above deodar forests, rooftops, and eventually through misty clouds that added a magical touch to the entire experience.

The kids squealed with delight every time we passed by a monkey hopping from tree to tree or when the fog cleared for a moment, revealing the beautiful sweeping vistas of the valley. My Parents, who usually stay quiet on such rides, kept pointing out landmarks to the children, while my siblings just kept saying, “Yeh toh film jaisa lag raha hai.”

Being in the middle of the monsoon season, the clouds danced all around us. We weren’t just watching them—we were inside them. It felt like a gentle flight through nature’s wonderland.

No Trekking, No Fuss – Just Pure Joy

One of the biggest reasons we chose the ropeway was to avoid the steep and sometimes slippery climb to Jakhu Temple. The ropeway dropped us right on top, a short and easy walk with such a view from the temple premises.

For families traveling with young children or elders, this feature is a blessing. You don’t need to worry about the physical strain, and you still get to soak in all the spiritual and scenic beauty that Jakhu Hill offers.

At the Top: Monkeys, Legends & Moments of Peace

Stepping off the cable car at the top station, we felt like as if we were greeted by cool mountain air and the chitter-chatter of monkeys. The Hanuman statue at Jakhu Temple, standing tall and orange against the foggy backdrop, looked both majestic and mysterious.

The kids were curious to know & explore more about the legend of Lord Hanuman’s leap, while the elders found solace in sitting quietly near the temple steps, watching the mist roll over the hills.

We spent nearly an hour there, offering prayers, clicking family pictures, and enjoying hot chai and Maggi from a small stall nearby. The kids were so excited that they even got a chance to feed a few monkeys with peanuts. It turned into a mini jungle adventure for all of us!

Down We Go – Still Mesmerized

The return ride was just as beautiful as it was while going to the temple. But This time, we were treated to clearer skies, and we could actually trace our journey from the Ridge to the temple station. The sun broke through the clouds in patches, and we were able to capture some stunning shots of Shimla’s layered rooftops, railway lines, and lush green cover.

As we reached the bottom, our family unanimously agreed—it was the best part of our trip.

Why the Jakhu Ropeway Stands Out for Families

Having tried multiple family-oriented attractions across different hill stations, the Jakhu Ropeway in Shimla deserves a special mention. Here’s why:

  • Inclusive & Accessible: Whether it’s toddlers, teens, parents, or grandparents, everyone can enjoy this ride.
  • Quick but Memorable: At just 6 minutes one way, it doesn’t exhaust you but still gives a wow-worthy experience.
  • Safe & Clean: From boarding to landing, the experience feels well-maintained and secure.

  • No Trekking Hassles: Especially helpful for seniors or families with infants.
  • Affordable & Efficient: You get great value for a modest ticket price.

A Few Tips from Our Family to Yours

  1. Go Early: Mornings are less crowded, and the views are better if you’re lucky with the weather.
  2. Keep Things Secure: Monkeys at the temple are playful, so zip up your bags and avoid carrying food openly.
  3. Don’t Skip the Return Ride: Sometimes, the views on the way back are even better!
  4. Make It a Combo: Pair the ride with a short walk on Mall Road or a meal at a nearby café to round out the day.

The Verdict: A Must-Do for Every Generation

Our Jakhu Ropeway family experience turned into the highlight of our Shimla vacation. It brought together three generations under one sky, floating above the hills, laughing through the clouds, and creating stories we’ll be telling for years to come.

Family trips are not always perfect. But sometimes, all it takes is a 6-minute ride through the sky with everyone to make us feel connected, alive, and happy with each other. If you’re planning a trip to Shimla, don’t just take our word for it—ride the clouds yourself.

Because in Shimla, the sky isn’t the limit. It’s just the beginning of your adventure.
